The 6.3 earthquake that caused billions of dollars of damage in Christchurch has left 100,000 homes with damage, with 10,000 being condemned. Locals’ lives are in disarray as city leaders and government work together to find solutions for problems that seem insurmountable at times.

Damage to the Water Systems in Christchurch

Widespread liquefaction during the earthquake has lifted and damaged large sections of the city’s sewers. As a result approximately 158,000 people do not have functioning toilets and have been asked to dig a hole in their back gardens. Portaloos have been placed in many suburbs and thousands of chemical toilets have been distributed.

While mains water has been restored to approximately 80% of households, the balance are having to rely on water tankers and friends and family. Kohler New Zealand Ltd, manufacturers of Englefield bathroomware, have sent a specially made mobile shower unit down to Christchurch. This consists of a14 metre truck and trailer that contains 14 showers.
