When many people say "self publish" they are thinking of using a print on demand, or POD, subsidy publishing company. Such companies package a book and print it for the writer, with fees for various services. This process is a form of printing with benefits, and is not the same as self publishing.

True self publishing requires a great deal of effort because there is no middleman. The author will need to spend a large amount of time and, usually, money to pull off the feat of self publishing a book. Before starting, he should look very carefully at his motivation and the reasons why he would want to set up his own small publishing company.

What is Self-Publishing and Why Would Anyone Self Publish?

Self publishing is the act of setting up a small publishing company to produce, distribute and sell a book. The author does the business set-up, obtains her own ISBN, bar codes, library cataloging and handles all the myriad details involved with self publishing. She will need to hire a cover artist, a layout professional, editor and maybe a publicist. The self publisher also finds a printing company to create the book and must then do marketing. Self publishing is hard, complicated work.
