Sometimes the truth is stranger and more horrible than anything a fiction writer can dream up, and it provides the basis for many a thriller or horror tale. Ed Gein, aka "The Plainfield Ghoul" or the "Butcher of Plainfield," put Plainfield, Wisconsin on the murder map in November, 1957. The only other criminal of the 20th century whose crimes approach the bizarre level of Ed Gein's crimes was Jeffrey Dahmer, the cannibal murderer.
Making of a Monster
Ed Gein was born in 1906 and grew up on a small 160 acre farm near Plainfield, Wisconsin with his parents and a brother, Henry. His mother, Augusta, a Lutheran religious fanatic, dominated his life. Although she hated George, her husband, there was no divorce because of religious reasons.
She preached about the immorality of the world, the evils of alcohol, and particularly about the wickedness of women in general, excluding herself, of course. Augusta believed that all women were prostitutes and did the devil's work, and she urged her sons never to associate with the female sex in general.
